Arabowszczyzna Forest

On May 13 (or May 12, according to other sources), 1942, the Germans, with the help of the local Auxiliary Police, murdered most of the rest of the Jews of Stołowicze. They drove them into a forest 3 kilometers north of the town, along the road to the village of Arabowszczyzna (survivors call this forest "Bereznianka" or "Biarozawka"; this toponym is no longer in use). There, the victims were forced, in groups, to climb down into ditches using a ladder, whereupon the Germans shot them. Each new batch of victims would be ordered to arrange the bodies of their predecessors in regular rows, before being shot in turn. The Germans temporarily spared several artisans. Besides, some Jewish fugitives came back to Stołowicze from the forests, trusting in the Germans' promise that any Jew who reported to the authorities voluntarily would be allowed to live in the village unmolested. These two groups were shot at the same site on June 20, 1942. In April 1943, the Germans found a group of Jewish survivors who had been hiding, mostly in the forests, and shot them not far from the murder site at Arabowszczyzna.
