The Germans established a forced labor camp in the vicinity of the town. According to Soviet sources, it was used for forced labor and infrastructure development for the German military. The SS also used it for the extermination of both local and foreign Jews, POWs, and local communists. On December 15, 1942, the Germans shot 105 local Jews at this camp.
