On January 21, 1942 the Germans in Yelizovo were attacked by a partisan force but the attack failed. On the same evening German reinforcements arrived and, together with local auxiliary policemen, they rounded up a number of Jewish and non-Jewish men. The Jews were separated from the non-Jews and taken across the Berezina River. There they were divided into several groups and, after being forced to undress, were shot in two graves in the forest at a place called Yelni.
