Railway Station Area
The Germans carried out the first large-scale anti-Jewish operation in Werenów in the first half of November 1941. That month, the Germans arrested the Jewish refugees from Vilna who had fled to Werenów at the peak of the mass shootings of Jews in that city. Apparently, there were more than 500 Jews from Vilna hiding in Werenów, and the German police managed to catch 288 of them. They were held in the building of the movie theater for seven days, being abused and tortured by their captors. On November 14, they were shot near the railway station by Lithuanian auxiliary policemen.
