Różana Area

In late May-early June 1942, about two weeks before the establishment of the ghettos, a small group of Jews from Kosów Poleski made an attempt to escape to Różana. They hired a cart and traveled toward Różana, but a local carter from the Alba Colony (apparently, a settlement in the vicinity of Różana) denounced them to the border police. The Jews were caught and taken to the "New" Colony, another settlement in the Różana area, where they were forced to dig graves for themselves, and were then shot. Apparently, the group consisted of about two dozen individuals.

Mereczowszczyzna Castle Area

The majority of the Jewish population of Kosów Poleski was murdered on August (or July, according to other sources) 25, 1942. The victims were taken in trucks to a pit that had been dug in advance 200 meters from Mereczowszczyzna Castle. Upon reaching the site, they were forced to lie on the ground face down. Then, in groups of about twenty, they were ordered to strip naked, jump into the pit, and lie there face down, whereupon they were shot. Those who refused to obey were shot on the spot. The shooting went on until midnight. The victims' clothes were taken by the Germans. The mass grave at the shooting site remained uncovered for about a week.

Kosów Poleski New Cemetery

On August 2, 1942, Soviet partisans occupied Kosów Poleski and offered dozens of young Jews the opportunity to join them. The Jewish recruits who turned out to be too old to join the partisans were told to return to Kosów Poleski. The Germans, who had reoccupied the town by then, ordered these Jews to go to the town's New Cemetery and dig graves for themselves. Then, all of the victims were shot, although their exact number remains unknown.
