Sugar Refinery in Staraya Sinyava

On August 19, 1941, upon the orders of Friedrich Jeckeln, the Higher SS and Police Leader in the south, some 300 Jews from Staraya Sinyava – men, women, and children – were taken to a long ditch located some 500 meters north of the local sugar refinery, where there was an unfinished bunker, and shot dead by a unit of Einsatzgruppe C. Some of the victims were buried alive. During the summer of 1943, Jews who had been caught hiding in Staraya Sinyava were likewise killed at that ditch.
