the Vcheraishe area forest
The bulk of the inmates of the Vcherayshe Ghetto were shot on May 1, 1942. The Jews were taken to a large pit that had been dug in advance by local Ukrainians. The pit lay in the forest three kilometers from Vcherayshe. The Jews were shot at this pit, while the non-Jewish population was shot at another nearby pit, apparently on some other date. According to Soviet documents, the number of Jewish victims of this massacre was 300. Some sources refer to a second shooting operation, which apparently took place at the same location in mid-July 1942, six weeks after the first one, but no further information about this event has been found.
