Gusarskiy Forest
In mid-September 1941 the Jews of Novo Ukrainka and nearby villages were arrested and held at the local police station and in the town's school. During the night and the following morning the victims were loaded onto canvas-covered military trucks. On the pretext of being sent to harvest beetroot they were taken to the Gusarskiy Forest, 12 kilometers southeast of the town. There the Jews were forced to strip to their underwear and taken to pits in groups of 5-6 and then shot with pistols and sub-machineguns. The bodies were buried in pits that had been prepared in advance. The total number of victims - women, children, and old people - was 150-170.
